ALL THOSE DAYS

Standalone parts may not be dominating the online skate media landscape in quite the same way they were in the 2010s (or at least that’s how it feels with so many sick crew videos popping up every week), but I think we can pretty safely say that we’re still living in a time where the skateboarding that’s filmed and put in front of us is consumed at an alarming rate. As in when you consider the average length, and air time you’ll give most of the clips you click on, especially compared to the time that goes into making them: things are still moving faster than ever. Of course that’s a pretty obvious point to be making in 2021… Plus it’s a bit rich coming from a magazine that publishes skateboard videos several times a day and that on countless occasions has encouraged people submitting them to ‘try tightening the whole thing up so that it’s just the absolute very best clips’ – like we’re clearly very much part of the ‘problem’ – but it’s in this context that ALL THOSE DAYS really stood out.
Nicolas Marti’s window into the Texas scene is 40 minutes long, doesn’t have any kind of traditional, easy to digest and divide parts, and moves along at a very leisurely pace… But you enjoy every second of it. The closest thing you could compare it to in terms of rhythm is probably Trudger’s Paradise, but even that had quite a different intensity to it. And obviously it’s very dense with incredible skating (especially from Gus and Alan) but all of a sudden you’ll find yourself staring at a clip of someone being turned into a grass yeti for ages, or even random attempts of tricks that never get landed… It’s hard to explain but all that stuff plus the way it’s loosely articulated arounds their spots make the whole thing strangely soothing. And although the edit almost feels messy at times, you know very well that tons of thought went into exactly how all that footage was organised. Nothing is where it is by accident, it’s all done to teleport you to their sessions. You’re just out there with them, taking your time and soaking up the beautiful memories they’ve shared as they come. It’s perfect.
