Precious Venus
Melbourne through the lens of early-2000s enthusiast Albert D’Urbano, with all the timelapses and ramped up slowmos you’d expect from a fan of that era (not to mention a nod to the Chief!), but also shitloads of very good skateboarding, with standout parts from John Halchenko and Jack Evans, a banging little chunk of Bradley Saunders footage (less than a month after his Airbags part…) and an extremely rare pinch flip out from Pete Lewis!
What’s up with all this Precious Venus business, though? Albert was kind enough to tell us a bit more about the title and the project; it turns out there’s a lot more to it than making us giggle about Homer Simpson…
“Precious Venus is a pretend wax company that I started in 2022. I made Venus de Milo wax sculptures in a few different shapes and styles. The wax isn’t really available for sale, but has been servicing just about every head in the Melbourne skate scene since I started making them.
It began after a crazy turn in my life where my nervous system went into a temporary minor shutdown, leaving me with uncontrollable shakes for months and a bunch of other shit. I wasn’t sure if I would ever skate or film again at that point. In the time I had to take off from being out skating/filming, I started the Precious Venus, pouring wax to give to my friends, named after a dumb Simpsons joke about the rarest Venus de Milo of them all. To me, the name also holds a deeper personal message, that life can be precious, and you don’t know when things might catch you out completely by surprise. Even though I can film again, I still have not stopped making the wax and supporting skateboarding in my home city, Melbourne, with the Precious Venus.”
